Norris Embry (1921-1981) est un artiste américain. Associé à l’art brut et au néo-expressionnisme, Norris Embry a mené une vie nomade marquée par une quête artistique intense. Après une formation à l’Art Institute de Chicago et à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Florence sous l’influence d’Oskar Kokoschka, il s’engage pleinement dans la peinture à partir de 1947.
Voyageur insatiable, il puise son inspiration entre San Francisco, New York et l’Europe d’après-guerre, avec une attirance particulière pour la Méditerranée et la Grèce. Proche de figures majeures de la Beat Generation, il partage avec eux un goût pour l’errance et l’expérimentation artistique.
À partir des années 1960, il s’installe à Baltimore, où il continue à peindre malgré de graves troubles psychiatriques. Jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, son travail témoigne d’un dialogue puissant entre l’intime et l’universel, dans une esthétique où se mêlent spontanéité et fureur créative.
Descendant et héritier de Norris Embry, l'expert Thomas Morin-Williams assure la création du catalogue raisonné de l'artiste.
