We are delighted to share that the Lockout Stereotypes.Counter-cliché exhibition will be inaugurated on Thursday, May 11th, 2023, at WASP, located on Ion Minulescu Street, no. 67 – 93. This unique exhibition aims to challenge stereotypes and break down clichés through thought-provoking art and installations. We invite you to join us for this exciting event and experience a fresh perspective on cultural norms and social biases

The exhibition brings together 6 women artists from Romania and Norway whose practices and visual dialogue aim to raise awareness of stereotyped mentalities and social segregation resulting from prejudice against Roma women as well as other minority groups. Lockout Stereotypes.Counter-cliché explores issues of equity as related to race, ethnicity, and gender, as well as multiculturalism, inclusion and urban education. At the core of the project is the motivation to fight against the double discrimination that Roma women systematically face (on ethnic and gender criteria). By centering on and promoting cultural activities around Roma culture outside stereotypes, we want to create a new perspective that encourages women to follow an artistic professional path.

The exhibition curated by Andreea Căpitănescu presents the works of artists Denise Lobonț, Margaret Abeshu (Norway), Mihaela Drăgan & Zita Moldovan, Silvia Trăistaru, and Mihaela Cîmpeanu. Evoking the particularities of a neglected minority culture suppressed by the constant need to reaffirm the adversity of malignant truisms, the exhibition underlines the statement that We are all the same people, we have the same blood.

The artworks comprise diverse artistic mediums from video installations to design sculptural objects and textiles following the artistic complementarity approach with the Ethiopian-Norwegian artist Margaret Abeshu whose artworks merge critical theory, fashion and art.

Lockout Stereotypes is a cooperation project between Romania and Norway, coordinated by the Art Media Events Studio Association, with the participation of the 4Culture Association and the Fiksdal Dans Foundation (Oslo), which takes place in the cities of Ploiești and Bucharest from September 2022 to April 2024.
