Before becoming a structured verbal language, writing was, in fact, an image. The exhibition "Palavra e gesto" [Word and gesture], with a critical text by Camila Bechelany, explores this very relationship, focusing on the artist's gesture. The show brings together works from different generations—Fabio Miguez, Maíra Dietrich, Marcelo Cipis, Marilá Dardot, Monica Barki, and Rafael Alonso—offering a broad perspective on how the written word becomes a significant element in contemporary art, creating and shifting meanings.
In the paintings of Miguez and Alonso, the word has a visual presence that adds rhythm and weight. While Miguez appropriates urban fragments to create a constructive and disruptive composition, Alonso uses text with weight and humor to contrast or complement the image. For Marcelo Cipis, the word is an essential part of the game between what is seen and what is read. In his drawings, captions and figures merge, showing that writing is, literally, drawing. The exhibition also features Marilá Dardot, who uses prefixes to explore the creation of language, and Maíra Dietrich, who treats text as a physical phenomenon. Lastly, Monica Barki blurs the line between word and image by displacing urban graffiti and ads into art objects, turning ambiguity into a poetic field.
