Twenty-eight works by artists who participated in the latest Biennale di Venezia are on display in the exhibition showcasing recent additions to the MASP collection.
Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director of MASP, the Biennale was the first to be conceived by a Latin American and featured mainly artists from the Global South, indigenous artists, outsiders, names linked to so-called “folk art,” and members of the Queer community. Picture Gallery in Transformation: Recent Gifts reflects this diversity and highlights the strengthening of the museum’s contemporary and international art collection.
The exhibition features works by artists Andrés Curruchich, Antonio José Guzmán & Iva Jankovic, Aydeé Rodríguez López, Dean Sameshima, Evelyn Taocheng, Kang Seung Lee, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Liz Collins, Omar Mismar, Paula Nicho, River Claure, Rosa Elena Curruchich, Sabelo Mlangeni, Salman Toor, Shalom Kufakwatenzi, Taylor Nkomo, Victor Fotso, Violeta Quispe, and Xiyadie. Among the works presented, 25 were actually in the Italian exhibition, while the other three are by artists who participated in the Biennale with works of a similar nature.
Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director at MASP, Regina Teixeira de Barros, curator of the collection at MASP, and Matheus de Andrade, curatorial assistant at MASP, the exhibition brings together works added to the collection through donations from artists, galleries, individuals, and anonymous donors.
