Description, horaires...
Casa de Cultura do Parque presents, from March 28 to June 28, 2026, the exhibition “Badauê” by Andrea Brazil (Gabinete), as part of its I Exhibition Cycle. Curated by Claudio Cretti, the institution’s artistic director, with a text by Ana Avelar, the show brings together works marked by geometrization and the visual reconfiguration of vernacular architecture.
Andrea Brazil’s trajectory (São Paulo, 1972) between Salvador and Itaparica Island, in Bahia’s Recôncavo region, underpins her functional visual language. The artist grew up in contact with coastal architecture shaped by anonymous interventions—made with broken roof tiles and leftover materials—that form what she calls “drawing in space.”
In this process, house and storefront façades, gates, and other urban elements are reorganized as lines, colors, and voids. “This is a collective and vernacular production that condenses history, climate, technique, and aesthetic desire into a single constructive gesture,” says Avelar.
Brazil’s perspective on the vernacular architecture of her childhood deepened during a trip to the Algarve region in Portugal. There, Moorish influence—recognizable in rounded corners and geometric patterns—resonated with what the artist knew from Bahia.
For Avelar, the connection is not incidental: Brazil notes that the Malê people, protagonists of the 1835 revolt in Salvador, were mostly of Muslim origin and carriers of a visual tradition that permeated the city’s material culture. Ornament, in this sense, holds historical layers that the surface of façades does not explicitly reveal.
One of the series presented is built on wooden panels with layers of joint compound applied in two stages. The design of the grilles—derived from an internalized visual memory—is carved into the surface until the underlying color is revealed. When the work emphasizes color, it stands out for its optical vibration, oscillating between the stridency of Pop Art and the silence of opaque surfaces.
In addition to Brazil’s solo show, the I Exhibition Cycle includes the group exhibition “Horror, Humor and the Absurd” (Galeria do Parque) and “Calendário” by Felipe Rezende (Projeto 280X1020). The cycle moves along the threshold between the real and the imaginary, articulating fabulation as an essential tool to subvert current configurations of the world. Claudio Cretti states that this cycle seeks, through different languages, to “push the boundaries between the conceivable and the inconceivable, highlighting the potential of fiction as a way of critically thinking about reality.”
Finally, the Performance Program will open on March 28, 2026, at 5 pm, with performer and dancer Maria Noujaim presenting “Lago.” Through the transposition of mythology into movement, the artist explores hybridities between animal and human, taking as its starting point the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan.
